                                              FOCUS ON POSTSEASON HONORS
Thirty-seven student-athletes at Penn State New Kensington earned All-Conference, Academic All-Conference, and John Evans Scholar/Athlete Memorial Award honors for 2005-06. The award recipients were recognized at the campus' annual academic and student achievement awards celebration on April 28. The All-Conference awards are given by the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference, as selected by the conference coaches, to students for superior athletic achievements. The Academic All-Conference awards are presented to students who for earn a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher while competing in intercollegiate athletics. The Evans awardees are honored for maintaining a 3.2 GPA throughout their athletic careers at the campus. The award is in memory of John Evans, a member of the 1966-68 basketball teams, who fell ill during his sophomore season and passed away on January 31, 1968. Rob Cugini, a senior on the men's basketball team, was a recipient of all three awards.  Amy Parks, a member of the women's volleyball team, earned both athletic and academic all-conference honors. As a freshman, she was ineligible for the Evans award which is reserved for upperclassmen.

                                                       Athletics Performance Awards
Penn State New Kensington ushers in a new era of athletics as students can compete in intercollegiate athletics for four years. The new four-year eligibility standards were coupled with the founding of a new conference that reflected the campus' commitment to student-athletes. The New Kensington campus is a member of the new Penn State University Athletic Conference that comprises fifteen campuses throughout the Penn State system. The conference recognizes and rewards student-athletes for their athletic ability as well as their academic success.

SOFTBALL LOSES IN PLAY-OFFS;
GOLF ENDS SEASON IN THE RAIN

The Penn State New Kensington softball was knocked out of the Penn State University Athletic Conference tournament April 24 with a 10-3 loss to Penn State Harrisburg in the opening round of the conference championship.

The fourth-seeded Lady Lions finished the season with a 9-9 record under first-year head coach D.J. Swigart. Four New Kensington errors contributed to the defeat as freshman pitcher Danielle Donahue, 5-6 on the year, held top-seeded Harrisburg to only six hits.

The season concludes a four-year run for the softball program which will be eliminated due to budget cuts. The program debuted in 2002 and won the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference (now the PSUAC) title in its first two years of existence.

Seniors Rikki Bates, Jen Eshbaugh, and Ashley Rushnock played all four years and were the first Penn State New Kensington students to take advantage of four-year eligibility rules that were instituted in 2005.

The golf team ended its spring campaign the way it began—with a rain-shortened match. A thunderstorm April 25 prevented the players from playing more than nine holes against Butler County and Allegheny County-North at Deer Run Golf Club. The Lions ended the season at 3-3.

FOUR EARN BASKETBALL HONORS
Four members of the men's and women's basketball teams received PSUAC recognition. Freshmen Mende Hicks and Laney Pastoria and seniors Dominick Logan and Rob Cugini were honorable mention selections for the 2005-06 All Conference team.

Hicks and Pastoria, a formidable backcourt duo, were the backbone of the second-year women's team. Hicks, a 5'8 guard, led the squad in scoring with 18 points per game followed by the 5'4 Pastoria with 14 point per game. The Lady Lions concluded their most successful season of intercollegiate play in fourth place in the PSUAC American division with a 4-9 record. Coach Tom Saulle's team, 6-17 overall, tripled its victory output from a year ago.

Logan, who played guard and forward; averaged 17.5 points (team-high) and 5 rebounds during the season. The 6'2 swing player led the team in assists (58), steals (35) and free throw percentage (.784). Cugini, a 6'3 forward, handled the bulk of the inside scoring and rebounding for the Lions. He was second on team in scoring average (11.3), rebounds (6.1), steals (33) and free throw percentage (.700) and third in assists (43). First-year coach Ryan Shank's team finished with a 7-19 overall record and a 6-13 PSUAC mark Logan and Cugini, along with Neville Ferguson, were the first seniors to take advantage of the campus' four-year eligibility guidelines that were instituted during the 2003-04 season.

The four players will be honored by the campus at the annual Student and Academic Achievement Awards ceremony, April 28 in the Forum Theatre.&n
