Penn State New Kensington now offers a graduate degree: Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum, which is designed to enhance the skills of teachers for public and private schools.
Through this program teachers will be able to:
- Communicate more effectively with students, parents, co-workers, and administrators
- Enhance their ability to conduct instructional programs that provide a sound intellectual and emotional climate for learning
- Increase their competence in a variety of teaching methods and in the utilization of materials and
content - Interpret and evaluate major issues and current trends in instructional curriculum practice and development.
Program Requirements:
- An applicant must present a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with at least a junior-senior grade-point average of 3.0.
- Students whose junior-senior grade-point average is lower than 3.0 but at least 2.5 are required to take the Graduate Record Examination Test (GRE).
- Candidates may enter the program at the beginning of fall or spring semesters, or the summer session. All required information, including GRE scores, if required, must be received by July 15 for fall admission, November 15 for spring admission, and March 15 for summer admission.
- A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for all graduate course work completed in the Teaching and Curriculum program is required for graduation.
- All coursework must be completed within seven years from admission into the program.
Most courses during the fall and spring semesters are two-and-one-half hours long and are scheduled one evening per week for fifteen weeks. During the summer session, most courses are scheduled during the morning or afternoon, two times a week for six weeks. Some night classes are offered in the summer, though not as frequently.
