ALLE-KISKI SOCIETY

AKS was a sponsor of Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Alle-Kiski Society, based on the New Kensington campus, is the local chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. We represent more than 5,000 alumni living in the Alle-Kiski Valley.

We seek to improve the New Kensington campus and the University by stimulating the interests of alumni and friends of Penn State living in the Alle-Kiski valley.

Penn State alumni, students, parents, and friends from the Penn State New Kensington service area -- Westmoreland, Allegheny, Butler, Armstrong, and Indiana counties -- are welcome to join the AKS. The society is about bringing together all these groups of Penn State supporters and sharing ideas.

Meeting are held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month (except July and December) at Dingbats Restaurant in the Pittsburgh Mills mall. The AKS board of directors is made up of alumni and friends of Penn State who are elected for two-year terms by fellow alumni. These Penn Staters volunteer to help shape and influence the policies and direction of the society.

The Alle-Kiski Society engages in projects throughout the year, interacting with other Penn State campuses and current students by social and fundraising events and other networking activities. AKS endows scholarships and is involved in their local communities, spreading the spirit of Penn State service to those in need.

The society puts forth recommendations for nominations for the annual PSAA alumni awards--Alumni Fellow and Distinguished Alumni.

We host a variety of events-both social and fundraising.

Social events include: a Graduate Reception for spring grads; a bus trip to a Penn State football game; an alumni awards ceremony at Penn State New Kensington Homecoming and Family Weekend in the fall; a $1,000 halftime shootout contest shot at all home basketball games; and students events on campus.

AKS sponsors spring and fall fundraisers for its endowed scholarship fund. The annual Bowlathon is slated for spring.
The 2010 Alumni Golf Scramble is scheduled for Friday, August 20, at The Links at Spring Church, home of the Penn State New Kensington golf team.

In addition, we co-sponsor campus events including the bi-annual Alumni Breakfast and Brunch socials in the spring and fall for local alumni.

KATIE SHOEMAKER IS RECIPIENT OF
$3000 ALLE-KISKI SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
Largest in Campus History

The Alle-Kiski Society of the Penn State Alumni Association recently awarded its largest award ever, a $3,000 scholarship, to a Penn State New Kensington student.

Katie Shoemaker, a junior business management/marketing major, was named the 2009-10 recipient of the Alle-Kiski Society Endowed Scholarship. A resident of Vandergrift, Shoemaker won the society's scholarship based on an essay on her Penn State experiences. The award is believed to be the largest scholarship amount that was given to a single student from a single donor.

A member of the dean's list, Shoemaker was recognized at the Academic and Student Achievement Awards ceremony in April for earning the highest grade-point average in the Division of Undergraduate Studies. She was named Lion Ambassador of the Year for serving as Penn State representative at numerous campus activities and in the community. Shoemaker is also on the list of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges and American Universities

In addition to her academic prowess, Shoemaker possesses leadership qualities that are necessary for involvement in numerous extra-curricular activities. She is president of the Lions Ambassadors, a voting member of the Student Government Association, and an orientation leader. On top of all that, she continues to serve in her community as a Sunday school teacher.

Since 1998, the Alle-Kiski Society has awarded $26,000 to 35 students. The first recipient, Pat Neil, received a $500 scholarship.

Based at the New Kensington campus, the society funds the endowment with proceeds from its annual alumni golf scramble that took place on Aug. 21 at The Links at Spring Church. Penn State alumni and friends are encouraged to re-connect with the University and campus by attending the Alle-Kiski Society meetings that are held at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at Dingbats Restaurant/Royal Gatherings in the Pittsburgh Mills mall.
