Alle-Kiski Society makes second installment on $26,000 pledge

6/29/2012 —

APPROVES $8000 DONATION AT ITS JUNE MEETING

The Alle-Kiski Society of the Penn State Alumni Association made the second installment of its pledge to contribute $26,000 over the next four years to Penn State’s fundraising campaign.

The society, based at Penn State New Kensington, donated $8,000 at its June meeting and increased the principal of its "Alle-Kiski Society Endowed Scholarship" from its current total of $57,000 to $65,000. The society is committed to raising an additional $12,000 by June 2014. The society established the scholarship at the campus in 1992 with an initial principal of $15,000. Six years later, it was fully endowed at $25,000. The first recipient, Pat Neil, received a $500 scholarship.

Last fall, the society awarded $3,000 in scholarships to five students--Gretchen Toy of Kittanning, Pa; Shanna Williams and Corey Zell of Apollo, Pa; and Vanessa Peck and Justin Tinnemeyer of Lower Burrell, Pa. Since 1998, the Alle-Kiski Society has awarded $33,000 to 43 students.

The society plans to fund the commitment with proceeds from its annual alumni golf scramble. The 13th edition is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Pa Last year, the tournament raised a record $6,800 as 83 alumni and friends participated in the outing.

The alumni group engages in various campus projects throughout the year, interacting with former and current students by social and fundraising events and other networking activities. During the spring semester, AKS donated $500 for a reception that recognized more than 100 students for their accomplishments, raised $5,500 for campus projects and scholarships at its annual Alumni Bowl-a-thon, and hosted an alumni social after a New Kensington Lions men's basketball game.

In the fall, the society will sponsor its annual "Alumni Central" tent at Fall Festival, Saturday, Sept. 29, at the New Kensington campus. The weather-proof tent serves as the main venue for the Penn State-Illinois football game on TV and as a social meeting place for alumni and the campus community. Refreshments will be available. Friends of Penn State are welcome to join in the alumni activities. For more about alumni activities, contact Bill Woodard, the campus liaison, at 724-334-6049 or uxw1@psu.edu.
