Penn State New Kensington in the WinterInclement Weather

When commuting to campus, weather is often a main concern for students. In the winter, it is not uncommon for large snow storms to cause delays and possibly cancellations. Because your professors commute to campus as well, some of them may not be able to make it to campus if the weather is perilous. You can call 724-334-6006 to find out if your class has been cancelled.

Cell phone users who subscribe to PSUTXT, Penn State's text-message alert system, will receive a text message for incidents that may impact the campus community. Students who have accessed eLion since Oct. 8 were automatically signed up for the service. Other students and faculty, staff and the general public need to subscribe online to the free service.

The decision to cancel or delay classes will be made as early as possible, usually by 6 a.m. for day classes and 4 p.m. for evening classes. If a two-hour delay is announced, classes will start at 10 a.m. and will last 45 minutes. After a New Kensington administrator makes a decision on the status of the campus, a text message is automatically sent to members. An alert will also appear on the campus homepage, under the "News and Event" section.

PSUTXT, a one-way communications tool designed to get emergency information to subscribers, was initiated in August 2006 as one means of emergency communication to the University community. The system is used in conjunction with Penn State Newswires and the Penn State Live Web site.

Subscription to PSUTXT is free, although individual cell phone carriers may charge for text messaging. To sign up for the service, visit http://newswires.psu.edu/ online and follow the instructions at the bottom of the page under the PSUTXT heading.

In times of snow, severe storms, or other emergencies, official word on operation or closing of the campus will be broadcast over the following stations:

KDKA: Channel 2

WTAE: Channel 4

WPXI: Channel 11

A determination to cancel or delay will be made as soon as possible so that information can be provided to the broadcast media. In the event that a delay of classes in announced, the following applies:
