Led by a 77 by co-medalist Matt Miller, a pair of 79s from sophomore John Hook  and junior Bubby Breznican, and a career-best 82 by sophomore Nick Sibula, Penn State New Kensington broke Penn College’s 157-match winning streak Tuesday with a 317-322 victory in the “Bernie Guss Classic” at The Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Pa.

The Penn State University Athletic Conference tournament was the first loss for six-time-conference-champ Penn College since the Williamsport, Pa.-institution entered the league in 2003. In addition to beating Penn College, the New Kensington Lions posted wins over the Penn State campuses of Fayette (351), Mont Alto (355), Shenango (379) and Greater Allegheny (392) to run its record to 14-2-1 in the PSUAC and 16-3-1 overall, the best since golf returned as an intercollegiate sport in 1999.

The tournament was named for Bernie Guss, a resident of Lower Burrell and professor emeritus of engineering at the campus.  The former golf coach guided New Kensington to four consecutive Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference titles, 1976-79.

At the beginning of the season, coach Bill Woodard vowed to grow a mustache until the team defeated Penn College. The three-week-old growth was removed by all the team members in a locker room celebration. The seven-year coach is again clean-shaven.
